Hit-and-run driver injures Gloucester youth

An unknown driver who struck and injured a Gloucester boy attempting to cross Route 14 Monday morning is still being sought by state police.

State police Sgt. Greg Mathias said the accident occurred at about 6:55 a.m. near the intersection with Rangtang Road. He said a 13-year-old boy and another child who missed their school bus were attempting to cross Route 14 from the eastbound side to catch the bus after it turned around and headed westbound.

As the two children crossed Route 14, Mathias said the 13-year-old victim fell in the left westbound lane and was struck by a vehicle that did not stop. He said the boy sustained a broken leg and was flown to Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk after he was transported to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.

Mathias said anyone with information regarding the accident or the vehicle that left the scene is asked to call the State Police at 693-6808.
