History on display

Six Mathews County churches were open Saturday for a tour sponsored by the Mathews County Historical Society. A “small but enthusiastic crowd” took advantage of the chance to learn history of the churches from guides, and that the tour was “blessed with a beautiful day,” according to tour chair Reed Lawson. Above, Franklin Forrest welcomes Janice Bohannon and Sonny Byrum, from left, to Antioch Baptist Church at Susan, where the visitors could view a display of the appearance of Antioch Baptist Church through the ages. Below, George McKnight, standing at right, explains history of Grace-Providence United Methodist Church at Mobjack to a group of visitors. Grace Methodist was built in 1896 and welcomed Providence Church members from Miles when that church closed in 1948.
