Historian to discuss preparations for WWI in Virginia

Alexander F. Barnes, command historian for the Virginia National Guard, will discuss Virginia’s preparations for war in the run-up to World War I at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 12, at Mathews Memorial Library.

His lecture is titled “To Hell with the Kaiser: Virginia Prepares for War.”

Barnes is an Army civilian worker at Fort Lee. A native of New York, he served in the Marine Corps and Army National Guard, retiring as a Virginia Army National Guard chief warrant officer in 2004 and from U.S. Army CASCOM at Fort Lee in 2015.

With a master’s degree in anthropology, Barnes has authored a number of books, including “Let’s Go! The History of the 29th Infantry Division” and “To Hell with the Kaiser: America Prepares for War,” a two-volume set describing America’s entry into WWI.
