Highland Games

Mathews Memorial Library held its 20th annual Highland Games & Picnic on Friday at the Piankatank Ruritan Club, providing participants aged 6-14 the opportunity to hear Scottish music performed live, learn a Scottish Highland dance, and participate in such traditional Scottish games as the Caber Toss (using rug tubes instead of heavy wooden poles), the Sheaf Toss (using bags of straw instead of 20-pound sheafs of straw), and the Stone Put (using cabbages instead of stones). Shown, above, is the Kilmarnock and District Pipe Band performing in traditional Scottish dress, and, below left, Carmelo Lopes tries his hand at playing on drummer Mary Morgan’s snare drum, while at right Nolan Zavala takes a turn at the Stone Put.
