Gloucester High School head football coach Sonny Merchant demonstrated how to control a handoff during practice this week. Merchant had over 90 students turn out for a chance to make the Dukes’ 2012 squad. Mathews High School, meanwhile, had 65 players turn out for the Blue Devils’ varsity and jayvee teams. Scrimmages start next week, with the season openers to be held on Aug. 30 (Gloucester) and Aug. 31 (Mathews).
