Preston Higgins of Harcum, who spent 41 of his 44 teaching years in his native Gloucester County, has been named the Gloucester Retired Educators’ Association’s Retired Educator of the Year. Higgins graduated from Gloucester High School in 1970. He continued his education at the College of William and Mary, receiving a bachelor of arts in elementary education in 1974 and a master of arts in science from Old Dominion University in 1983. Higgins began teaching career at Berkeley Elementary School in Williamsburg-James City County before being employed by Gloucester County Public Schools. In Gloucester, he was an upper elementary teacher at Gloucester Middle School for seven years before becoming part of the first faculty to teach at Petsworth Elementary School, where he taught for 32 years. The Petsworth faculty named Higgins its Teacher of the Year in both 1999 and 2017, when he went on to be selected as the Gloucester County Public Schools 2017 Elementary Teacher of the Year.
