A program to dedicate signage at the Heritage Trail will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday adjacent to the Cook’s Corner Office Complex, 2893 General Puller Highway, Saluda. The 2,500-foot trail, owned by Middlesex County, opened to the public in 2022. The county has now funded historical research and interpretive signage highlighting the depth of African American life in the area in education, civic engagement, religion, recreation and entertainment, health care, and commercial enterprises, a release said. This signage will be shown during the Heritage Trail: “One Step at a Time” program on Saturday. One of the signs honors G. Butler Harris and Lucy Cook Harris, Cook’s Corner residents who published a newspaper, The Middlesex Review, and also operated a drive-in theater, indoor theater, ball park, and ice cream shop.
