HERBERT F. SHACKELFORD

Herbert F. Shackelford, of Gloucester Point, passed away peacefully and journeyed to his Heavenly home early in the morning on May 11, 2017. He was surrounded by his family and several of his wonderful caregivers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James F. and Flossie K. Shackelford, and his brother, James Earl Shackelford.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 59 years, Joanne P. Shackelford; daughters, Connie Shackelford Licone (Bill Wells) and Pamela Shackelford Strickland (Lincoln); grandson, Hagan B. Witt; sisters-in-law, Jean H. Shackelford and India Wood; niece, Rhonda S. Byrd, and other loving family members and friends.

Herbert graduated from Achilles High School, and began his career as an engineering technician at NASA in 1947. He was involved in the research and fabrication of Apollo 11’s first landing on the moon and the space shuttle Columbia. He received numerous awards over his 37-year career and retired in 1984. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard for three years from 1950-1953. He was an active member of Gloucester Point Baptist Church. Herbert was a kind, gentle, loving and giving man. He was always ready to help his family and friends in any way possible. He loved working in his yard and in earlier years, had a large and plentiful garden.

The family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers, Ann Fansler, Mona Trusty, Rachel Brown, Heather Keyes, Nancy Bolton, Jacki Kilby and Lisa Kight, for their love and compassion, and the wonderful nurses and aides from Riverside Hospice, especially Christy West, who helped him and the family greatly.

A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Bud Goude was at 11 a.m. Monday, May 15, 2017, at Gloucester Point Baptist Church. Interment followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday, May 14, 2017, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
