HENRY WILSON ‘SNOOKIE’ GUILL JR.

Henry Wilson “Snookie” Guill Jr. of New Point, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at Heron Cove at Sanders Convalescent in Gloucester, Virginia. He was 80 years old. He was preceded in death by his wife and sweetheart, Ethel Curling Guill, in 2004. He is survived by his cousin and dear friend Barbara Moore Curling of North Chesterfield, Virginia, and many of Ethel’s nieces and nephews. Particularly close are Marlene Curling of Henrico County and her brother, Montee Curling and his wife Karen. He is also survived by his wonderful friends, Dave and Pat Chance of New Point.

Snookie was originally from the Richmond area. Ethel’s relatives were the owners of the New Point Campground. He and Ethel spent nearly every weekend for eight years restoring their farmhouse in New Point and having fun at the campground. After their retirements, the farmhouse became their permanent home. He enjoyed living on the Chesapeake Bay immensely and knew absolutely everyone in Mathews and they knew him. He loved his silver convertible. As a young man, Snookie spent four and one-half years in the Navy and served aboard high speed destroyer troop transports and dock landing ships. His assignments took him to the Arctic, Greece, the Rock of Gibraltar, Turkey, Spain, Italy, London, and Hawaii. Due to the Suez Crisis of 1956 he was delayed returning home. He said the last six months of his assignment were the scariest. Later in life, Snookie was proud to be a Gold Card Member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors Local 51, from which he retired.

He will be missed by his many breakfast club friends, each of whom could tell a really good story. His heartfelt thanks to Charlotte Kelly who loved him even on his grouchy days. Snookie would like to thank his doctor, Dr. Shivers; nurses and assistants at Heron Cove at Sanders for their patience and love: Jo Ellen Fotiou, RN, Annette Mitchell, LPN, Amanda Baines, LPN, and CNAs Mindy Enjor, Melisa Hall, Maryann Sawyer, Amanda Troust, and Taylor Truston and Jonathan Metcalf, Hospice Team.

At Snookie’s request, graveside services will be held at Maury Cemetery, 2700 Maury St., Richmond, Virginia (804-646-8259) on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at 1 p.m. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, Virginia, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
