Helping a neighbor in need

The Town of Kilmarnock suffered a devastating fire on April 19 that took the life of one town resident and displaced six others from their apartments, as well as five small businesses which occupied the main floor of three buildings in the downtown area. The Mathews Community Foundation, an affiliate organization of the Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond, supported fire relief efforts with a $5,000 donation. Through a partnership with the Town of Kilmarnock and the Lancaster County Department of Social Services, the River Counties Community Foundation has raised approximately $85,000 from community members and local businesses to support survivors of the fire and to help pay final expenses of the resident who died so that his family is not burdened with these unexpected costs. “While the vast majority of our funds go directly to support only Mathews’s needs, our board wanted to help our close neighbors in this tragic situation,” MCF chair Ron Lambert said. “Community foundati...
