Heaton on Olympic development squad

She learned to play soccer when she was four and her love for the sport has taken Hanna Heaton through the ranks of developmental teams to her participation in international friendlies, or friendly matches, in Iceland later this month. 

Heaton, an eighth grader at Peasley Middle School, began playing soccer with Gloucester Parks and Recreation at the age of four, according to her mother, Amy Heaton.

At age six, Heaton joined the local Baystars FC soccer club and played on a coed team until she was 12. She then moved to the Virginia Legacy Soccer Club in Williamsburg to join an elite all-girls’ team.

Mrs. Heaton said her daughter successfully tried out for the Central District of Virginia’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) in September of 2016 and in November joined players from all five Virginia ODP districts for a state team tryout.
