Hearing Tuesday on Seabreeze lease

Mathews supervisors will hold a public hearing on leasing the Seabreeze Restaurant, a county-owned property, at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the historic courthouse on Court Street.

A request for proposals from prospective tenants for the Gwynn’s Island property was issued by the board on May 26 after the current tenant, Gary Galluzzi of Mathews and New Jersey, did not notify the county by the February deadline that he wanted to renew his lease, which expires June 30. Galluzzi also chose not to submit a proposal to the county for leasing the property, telling this newspaper that “I’m not going to beg for something that was already mine.”

The county received two proposals for use of the Seabreeze, but one was not complete and therefore was not considered, said Mathews County Administrator Mindy Conner.
