Hearing Tuesday on permit for new Dollar General location

Mathews County’s planning commission and board of supervisors will hold a joint public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the historic courthouse on Court Street to consider a request for a conditional use permit for a Dollar General Store at Hudgins.

Venture Properties VII LLC has applied for the permit on behalf of Dollar General Corporation, said Mathews planner Thomas Jenkins. He said the new store, if approved, would be 9,100 square feet. The existing Dollar General in Town Center is 9,100 square feet, as well, he said, adding that he doesn’t know whether the current store would be vacated. Venture Properties could not be reached for comment.

The property proposed for the store is located at 8143 Buckley Hall Road and is owned by Gilbert and Laverne Ackes of Saluda. Zoned rural, it consists of 4.02 acres with a c. 1936 two-story, two-bedroom home on site. Venture Properties proposes to demolish the house and erect a one-story structure.
