The Mathews County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing at 6 o’clock tonight, Thursday, March 13, to consider adding $863,321 to the current budget that would allow the county to purchase the former Mathews Boys and Girls Club for $575,000 and convert it into a firehouse to replace Station 1.
Other budget additions under consideration will be $211,146 for the purchase of additional and replacement equipment for the radio project and $77,175 to pay for the match for the VDOT sidewalk project at Mathews High School.
If approved, the additions would increase the FY2024-25 budget to $40,839,157 from its current $39,975,836. The board will decide whether to pull the funding from the $5 million in interim financing that was established last September with Davenport and Company through the Mathews Economic Development Authority.
A feasibility study is underway to determine if the Boys and Girls Club will be suitable for a fire station. If not, the funding will not be pulled from the interim financing.
The board has also scheduled a closed session prior to the hearing, during which members will discuss two matters: the acquisition of real property for a new fire station and the disposition of public property at 384 Old Ferry Road.
