Hearing next week on sidewalks in lower Gloucester

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a design public hearing about adding sidewalks in three places in lower Gloucester from 5-7 p.m. next Wednesday, March 23, at the Abingdon Volunteer Fire & Rescue building on Hayes Road.

VDOT spokesperson Kelly Hannon said that the state agency is proposing pedestrian improvements on Route 216 (Guinea Road), Route 1216 (Hayes Road) and Route 1219 (Hook Road).

The construction project will cost approximately $1.9 million, Hannon said, and work is expected to begin in November and last 3-6 months.

The proposed project will enhance safety for pedestrians. The project would build about 300 feet of sidewalk on Guinea Road north of the Route 17 intersection.

Then, the sidewalk would continue south of that intersection along Hook Road. From there, the sidewalk would continue east along Hayes Road all the way until the road re-intersects with Route 17 near Bellehaven Drive (near Lamb Exterminating).
