Hearing Monday on Mathews budget

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors will conduct a public hearing on the proposed 2016-2017 county budget at 7 p.m. Monday in the historic courthouse on Court Street.

The $23.93 million proposed budget shows little change from this year’s amended budget of $23.85 million, and supervisors have proposed keeping the tax rates of $.54 per $100 of assessed value for real estate and $3.70 per $100 for personal property unchanged.

Although there was discussion during a recent budget work session of doing away with the boat tax of $1.45 per $100 of assessed value, that tax remains unchanged, as well. Nor are any changes proposed to the $2.14 per $100 of assessed value for such personal property as machinery and tools.

Among the changes that were included in the proposed budget were an additional $100,000 for the school system, which falls well short of the $558,627 the schools had requested in local funding; an additional $20,000 to help fund the Mathews Family YMCA’s propos...
