Hearing Monday on Mathews budget

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors will conduct a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday in the historic courthouse on the proposed FY 2019 county budget and its accompanying tax rates.

This will be the final opportunity for residents to express their opinions about the proposed budget before its scheduled adoption during the board’s regular monthly meeting at 1 p.m. on the following Tuesday, April 24.

The $24.76 million budget calls for no tax increases. The current and proposed rates per $100 of assessed value are: 57.5 cents on real estate and mobile homes; $3.70 on automobiles, light trucks and motorcycles; $1.45 on boats; and $2.14 on other personal property, machinery and tools.

If the budget is approved, the school system is slated to receive $7.14 million in county funding for operations.
