Hearing dates set for complaints about real estate assessments

The Mathews County Board of Equalization has set dates for hearing complaints from residents regarding their real estate tax assessments. The deadline for making an appointment is this Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Appointments will be 15 minutes long each and will be scheduled between 1 and 4 p.m. on Monday, March 20; 4 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 23; or 1 and 4 p.m. on Monday, March 27.

After hearing complaints, the board will decide whether to increase, decrease or affirm such assessments, according to a notice on the county’s website. Before the board can grant a change, the taxpayer must prove that the assessment isn’t uniform with similar properties, said the notice.

Hearings will be held in the historic courthouse on Court Street.

To make an appointment, call the commissioner of the revenue at 804-725-7168. Applications for appeal are available at the commissioner’s office in Liberty Square on Buckley Hall Road.  ...
