HAZEL CLAUDETTE PHILLIPS

Hazel Claudette Phillips, 80, of Gloucester, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Oct. 8, 2012.

Born in Mathews, Va., she spent most of her life in Northern Virginia where she owned and operated several beauty salons, later a woman’s clothing boutique, an antique shop and lastly a cleaning business.

After her retirement, she moved with her husband to Gloucester, where she enjoyed gardening, painting, decorating and working in her church. The love and warmth which she inspired in our hearts will remain with us forever.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Phillips; daughters, Debbie Burks and husband Fred, and Carla Sturm of Manassas, Va.; sister, Gloria Hudgins and husband Bobby of Hayes, Va.; grandchildren, Justin Sturm and wife Jamie and Devere Sturm, and four great-grandchildren, all of Morehead City, N.C.; her niece, Dianne Elie and husband Ed; great-nephew and -niece, Sean and Lynsey Fishbein of Connecticut; and cousins, Gary and Bonnie Ogden of Hayes.

The service to celebrate Claudette’s life conducted by the Rev. Carol Bookwalter and Pastor Steve Sales was held at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 2101 Mark Pine Road, Hayes, at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, 2012. Interment will be private at Mount Comfort Cemetery, Alexandria. The family received friends Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, from 4-5:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
