Haywood shines in All-Star pitching performance

Recent Gloucester High School graduate Morgan Haywood competed for the last time in her red Dukes softball uniform while playing for the East squad in the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Softball Game on July 13 at Liberty University.

Haywood, a hard-throwing left-hander who will be pitching for Virginia Tech in the fall, is the all-time leader in the VHSL with 35 career doubles and is tied for fourth with 130 RBIs.

Haywood entered the All-Star game in the fifth inning facing a 2-0 deficit. She left the game in the bottom of the ninth inning after giving up one earned run in four innings of work and with an 8-4 lead. Haywood also went 2-1 at the plate with an RBI single.  Haywood was replaced in the ninth by the game’s starting pitcher but re-entered with a bases-loaded jam. She wiggled out of it, stranding the winning run on second base.
