Haywood, Alto win regional softball honors

Gloucester High School softball players Morgan Haywood and Shelby Alto pulled in more post-season honors this week when they were named to the All-5A South Region First Team.

Haywood was also unanimously voted as the 5A South Region Player of the Year for her hitting and pitching prowess. The region includes Conferences 9, 10, 11 and 12 and stretches from Virginia Beach to Richmond.

Haywood, a rising senior, finished a memorable season in which she was 15-2 on the mound and had a remarkable batting average of .631 overall and .705 in Conference 10 play while driving in 36 runs.

Among her 36 hits this season, Haywood tallied six doubles, seven triples and four home runs. She has 103 career hits with 43 of them being for extra bases.

On the mound, the southpaw had 120 strikeouts while walking only 13 for a strikeout to walk ratio of 9.23 to 1. Haywood had an earned run average of 1.06 with an on-base average of .183.
