Hayes resident surprised by burglary suspect

A Hayes man was charged with burglary after a Gloucester resident returned home to find him inside of his residence Sunday night. 

Gloucester Sheriff’s Office Lt. Jamie Sharp said deputies responded to a burglary in progress call in the 4000 block of Marsh Lane at 10 p.m. Sunday. 

Sharp said when the homeowner arrived and went inside the residence, the suspect jumped out of a closet and attacked him. With the aid of a neighbor, Sharp said the homeowner was able to subdue the suspect until patrol units arrived. He said the suspect attempted to flee the deputies but they quickly captured him. 

Arrested was John Michael Marsh, 23, of Abingdon Heights Drive in Hayes. He was charged with burglary, two counts of assault and battery, and damaging property valued at less than $1,000.
