A Hayes man died in a single-vehicle accident Friday night on Low Ground Road in Gloucester.

Virginia State Police spokesman Corinne Geller said Richard G. Gibson, III, 29, of Hayes was a passenger in a northbound 1995 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck when it ran off the right side of the road down into a ditch before striking a tree. She said Gibson died at the scene of the 9:40 p.m. accident that occurred just south of Zack Road.

First Sergeant Caren Sterling of the Area 33 state police office in Gloucester identified the driver of the pickup as 27-year-old Melissa Ann Parks of Gloucester. Geller said Parks was charged with reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and failing to maintain proper control of a vehicle.

Gibson was the third fatality of 2013 in Gloucester County.
