Hayes man dies in Main Street accident

A 51-year-old Hayes man died after he was struck while walking in the Gloucester Main Street roadway late Tuesday. Robin Austin, 51, of Bolden Drive died from his injuries after he was air transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, according to Sgt. Greg Mathias of the Area State Police Office in Gloucester.

Mathias said Austin was walking in the left lane of southbound Main Street when he was struck by a 2006 Chevy Malibu that was also southbound in the left lane. The accident occurred at 11 p.m. just north of Fox Mill Run Drive.

Mathias said Austin had no identification on him at the time of the accident and state police were not able to determine his identity until Wednesday evening. He said no charges were placed against the driver of the Malibu, 31-year-old Craig Hiers of Hudgins, who was not injured.
