A Hayes man was charged in connection with a traffic fatality that occurred in Hampton on Friday. 

The two-vehicle accident happened at about 8:40 p.m. Friday in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 east of Cunningham Drive. The driver of a 2015 Toyota Corolla stopped on the left shoulder of the interstate, for reasons unknown at this time, according to Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya.

As the driver was attempting to merge back into the traffic lane, a 1996 Toyota Tacoma, also traveling westbound, made a left lane change into the lane the Corolla was attempting to merge into. The Tacoma then struck the Corolla in the rear.

The Corolla was occupied by four passengers, including the driver. Anaya said a back seat passenger, 19-year-old Kelly Anne Tabaniag of Newport News, died at the scene. The other three occupants suffered major injuries and were transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News.
