Hayden Owens wins THMS spelling bee

Thomas Hunter Middle School sixth grader Hayden Owens will be advancing to the next round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Eric Engler sponsored the Mathews County school’s entry into the 2021 Scripps Spelling Bee. Throughout December, sixth grade social studies teacher Leslie Hudgins held classroom spelling bees in grades six through eight to determine winners to move forward to the schoolwide bee.

The schoolwide bee was held in early January with the winners announced on Jan. 13.

As the THMS winner, Owens will represent Mathews in the regional Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee, which will be held virtually on Feb. 13. Owens is the son of Robert and Carol Owens of Port Haywood.

Taking second place in the Thomas Hunter bee was sixth grader Jordan Sadeg, with eighth grader Angel Shultz coming in third.
