Haury named GREA Teacher of Year

Joanie Haury, a retired public school nurse, was recently named the 2016 Retired Teacher of the Year by the Gloucester Retired Educators’ Association. Haury was honored during the Sept. 22 GREA meeting at the Disabled American Veterans building in Gloucester. 

The selection of Haury underscores the importance of support staff to the education of students in the county, according to Nina Buzby, GREA Selection Committee Chair.

Haury was recognized as the School Nurse of the Year three times during her 25 years of service as a Gloucester Public Schools nurse. She was also a member of the Virginia School Nurses Association and was a regional director for two years.

In the community, Haury has been a lead instructor of CPR and First Aid to several Gloucester groups and has given presentations on asthma to parents, students and teachers. She worked over 40 years as a registered nurse.
