Harry Elbert Dunn, 94, of Gloucester, retired bank official and civic leader, died April 15, 2013 at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.
One of six children he was born March 15, 1919 in Upright, Essex County, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hallie Payne Seale and Harry Gilbert Dunn; his sisters, Louise Fogg and Marjorie Danner; brothers, Robert and Gilbert Dunn.
Survivors include daughters, Deborah Gausvik (Tom), Diane Carr (Arthur); son, Edmund (Vicky); grandson, Matthew Dunn; niece, Karen Wilbanks (Richard); great-nephew; Christopher Wilbanks; nephews, Alan Courtney, Brian Dunn (Debbie), and close family friend, Wayne Wray.
During World War II he served as a radio operator, moving as the war progressed, through Corsica, Italy and Germany, until discharged with the rank of Staff Sgt. in June 1945 shortly after the war ended in Europe.
He graduated in 1948 from the University of Richmond with a B.S. Degree in Business Administration. Various Richmond area jobs followed until he joined the Bank of Gloucester in 1961 as Assistant Vice President. He became president in 1972, serving until retiring in 1984 at age 65 from then Crestar Bank.
President of the Treakle Foundation since 2009, he was active in various civic and community organizations including a founder and past president of the Gloucester Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Gloucester Rotary Club and Gloucester Ruritan Club, charter member of Ware River Yacht Club, founding member of Friends of Dragon Run, past treasurer and a past secretary and director of the Gloucester Youth Baseball League.
He was a member of Petsworth Baptist Church. He enjoyed many other activities including bee keeping and hunting.
The family received friends on Wednesday, April 17 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18 at Petsworth Baptist Church. Burial will be in Windsor Gardens Cemetery and Mausoleum.
