HAROLD SMITH

Harold Smith, 82, of Hayes, a native of Gloucester County, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019.

Harold retired from the Shipyard after 35 years as a crane operator in the Pipe Department. Harold graduated high school in 1956. He had a great passion for sports but his greatest love was for baseball. He was once offered a contract to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He will always be known as the greatest baseball player of all times.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willie R. Smith, and mother, Ella M. Smith; sisters, Mable Decker and Norma Hogge; brothers, William C. Smith and Wilbur Smith, and nephew, William “June” Smith.

He is survived by his nephew, Ronnie Smith (Rhonda) of Gloucester Point; nieces, Deborah Jackson (Clif) of Gloucester, Beverly Clancy (Frank), Sherry Decker, Patsy Spicer, Nancy Seymour, Cindy Smith and Cheryl Bernstien; sisters-in-law, Evelyn “Cookie” Smith and Carol Smith; niece-in-law, Jo-Ann Smith, and several great-nieces and -nephews.

The family received friends at Hogg Funeral Home on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, from 6-7:30 p.m. A Celebration of Life service conducted by the Rev. Richard Whiteheart was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, at Hogg Funeral Home. Interment followed in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery.
