HAROLD C. JACKSON

Harold C. Jackson passed away peacefully on Dec. 30, 2012.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Anne Trivitte Jackson; daughter, Betty Anne Freeman; three brothers, Earl, Edgar and Fane Jackson, and a sister, Helen Sutherland.

He is survived by daughter, Eva J. Mullins and her husband Donald; two granddaughters, Tracy Kiefer and husband Mark and their children, Katie and Ryan of Hickory, N.C., and Shannon League and husband Jay and their children, Riley and Julianne of Rock Hill, S.C.

He loved his family and friends, and will be remembered for his smile, wonderful personality and great sense of humor.

Harold was born in Dickinson County, Va., and lived there until he graduated from Haysi High School. After graduation he attended a business school for two years in Bristol, Va., and in 1936 he moved to Pound, Va., to become part owner of Pound Hardware and Furniture Company. He married in 1938 and lived in Pound until he moved to Gloucester, Va., in 2007 to be close to his daughter, Eva.

Harold was a veteran of World War II. He was a successful businessman and an active leader in the community, as he was a member of Wise County Board of Supervisors, Pound Masonic Lodge (62 years), Pound Shriners Club, and Pound Lions Club (charter member). He was a director of People’s Bank of Pound and a major stockholder in Southwest Oil Company in Big Stone Gap, Va.

In May 2001, Harold was given an award by the Pound mayor for his outstanding contributions to the town to which he was so dedicated. Always a generous and caring person to those less fortunate, Harold established and endowed scholarships at the University of Virginia Wise. He was very active in Pound United Methodist Church. For years, he sang in the choir, was chairman of the finance committee, taught Sunday school and played Santa Claus to the children.

Harold always enjoyed sports, especially football, golf and baseball.  Later in life, golf became his favorite hobby; along with his golf buddies, he played different courses in the U.S. as well as the St. Andrews course in Scotland. Every year for 25 years, he attended the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Ga. He loved to go golfing with Eva, Donnie and their good friends when visiting them in Gloucester.

In our father’s memory, donations may be made to Pound United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1208, Pound, Va. 24279 or to Gloucester Fire and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
