Happy Birthday, Capt. Sally

Members of the Capt. Sally Tompkins Chapter of Mathews County of the United Daughters of the Confederacy remembered the captain’s birthday on Tuesday by placing a decorated plant on her grave at Christ Episcopal Church, Williams Wharf Landing Road. Capt. Sally was born at Poplar Grove on Nov. 9, 1833 and was the only female officer in the Civil War, said chapter president Christine Anthony, left. Tompkins started Robertson’s Hospital in Richmond and received her commission in the Confederate cavalry from President Jefferson Davis in order to continue operating the hospital after civilians could no longer receive medical supplies from the government, said Anthony. Shown with Anthony, from left, are Mary Hunley, registrar; Theresa Denby, member, and Katherine Hendrick, treasurer. Photo by Sherry Hamilton.
