Hampton U. president visits Moton Center

The historic grounds of the R.R. Moton Center played host to dozens of guests on Aug. 27 for a visit from Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey.

Harvey, who is entering his 40th year as president of Hampton University, was there to accept the R.R. Moton Award for Leadership, as well as to address students and alumni in attendance. 

Guests were treated to lunch in the historic Manor House, which has hosted civil rights activists, college presidents, and even Justice Thurgood Marshall in its history. 

Following the meal, Gloucester Institute President Kay Coles James, a Hampton University graduate, addressed guests and introduced Harvey. James’s remarks centered on the importance of leadership: “We are in desperate need of great leadership,” she said. “What is so important is that we take time, energy, and resources and pour it into this generation.”
