Hampton motorcyclist dies in Gloucester crash

A Hampton motorcyclist died in a crash Monday evening in Gloucester while attempting to avoid a traffic stop for speeding. 

According to state police, a Gloucester Sheriff’s deputy running radar on Powhatan Drive at Abingdon Elementary School attempted to stop two eastbound motorcycles for speeding. 

One motorcycle stopped, but the other, a 2009 Kawasaki driven by Cregg Wesley Cartwright, turned around and headed westbound on Powhatan at a high rate of speed, police said. The deputy stayed with the motorcycle that stopped.

State police said a 2008 Toyota Camry turned onto Powhatan Drive from Mission Lane and was struck by the motorcycle. Cartwright, 26, of Hampton died at the scene.

This was the third traffic fatality in Gloucester this year. ...
