Ham radio event Saturday at Abingdon Park

The Middle Peninsula Amateur Radio Club will mark the 411th anniversary of the capture of Captain John Smith with a gathering of ham radio operators at Abingdon Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The operators will display their equipment and answer questions from attendees before setting up their antennae and radios to get on air. They will be communicating with other amateur radio enthusiasts across the country. There will also be information available on how to get on air.

The main topic of broadcasts will be Gloucester’s early history, especially interactions between the native Powhatan tribes and European colonizers. Smith’s own account maintains that 12-year-old Pocahontas saved him from execution, while historians continue to debate the specifics of the anecdote.
