The Middle Peninsula Amateur Radio Club commemorated Captain John Smith during a special event on Oct. 21 at Abingdon Park in Hayes. The club set up two radio stations along with antennas and made numerous contacts throughout the U.S. and overseas including Spain and the Netherlands. Some of the club’s newest members learned how to operate the radios and how to give signal reports, providing a history of Captain Smith and Gloucester’s history and the area as one of the first colonial settlements of the New World.
