Haiku House, the home at the intersection of Buckley Hall Road and Main Street in Mathews formerly known as Hyco House, is now open as an event-hosting facility.

Owner Sam Forrest said he has a lot of events planned during the next few months, from murder mystery dinners to speed dating gatherings. He said the home, which is filled with handmade furniture designed and created by Forrest himself, is available for the community to rent for various activities, including weddings, family reunions, political rallies and dinners.

“We want to be a full-spectrum event space,” he said.

Forrest said he’s particularly interested in hosting cultural and arts events, especially evenings of classical music that could make use of his 1925 Steinway Model M grand piano. He said he plans to have a Haiku workshop in honor of an old friend who was a Zen Buddhist and who was the inspiration for the home’s name change.
