H.B. ROBINS

H.B. Robins, 90, of Hayes, passed away at Heron Cove, Gloucester on September 3, 2016.

He was born on October 4, 1925 to Martha B. and Herbert B. Robins Sr. in Perrin, Va.

After graduating from Achilles High School in 1943, H.B. enlisted in the Navy where he served in the Atlantic Fleet aboard an LST transporting troops into Normandy. As a radio operator aboard this ship he received the official notice from Washington on August 14, 1945, that the war was over. After being honorably discharged from the military and attending V.P.I. (now known as Virginia Tech), H.B. was hired by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company as an Engineer. He retired from the Nuclear Engineering Department after 38 years of loyal service.

H.B. was a member of Abingdon Episcopal Church and a former member of Union Baptist Church. He was a member of Ware River Yacht Club and the “Turtles” Supper Club whose company he enjoyed for many years.

Besides his parents, H.B. was preceded in death by his sister, Estelle Heywood (and her husband Linwood) and his brother, Joseph Robins (and his wife Frances).

Survivors include Peggy Clements Robins, his wife of 60 years; his daughter, Pamela Robins and her husband John Cunningham and their children Moira Margaret and Jack; and his son, Drew Robins and his wife DiAnn and their children Joe and Thomas. He is also survived by his devoted nieces, Faye Kellum, Diane Davis and JoEllen Fotiou; his brother-in-law, “Bucky” Clements and his wife Marian; and his sister-in-law, Barbara Groh and her husband Norman; various nieces, nephews and friends; and his beloved little buddy, Taz.

H.B. was a quiet, unassuming gentleman who was always known for his quick wit and sharp mind, his love of animals, and his unwavering love for his family.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Zullo, Dr. Shivers and the entire staffs of Heron Cove and Riverside Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to H.B.

The family will receive friends Thursday, September 8, 2016, from 6-8 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. A private committal service for family will be in Abingdon Episcopal Church Cemetery. The Rev. Torrence Harman will officiate.

In memory of H.B. the family requests that donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.
