Guinea Dipping returns to chilly York River on Saturday

Prove you’re strong. Jump into the York River on Saturday.

The second annual Guinea Dipping, to be held at 1 p.m. at Gloucester Point Beach, is a benefit for the Gloucester Rowing Association. A release said “anyone can dip for a $30 donation.”

In addition to the (probably brief) swim, participants can enjoy coffee or hot chocolate, participate in raffles, and wear the free shirt given them for taking the plunge.

Emergency crews and certified divers will be at the beach to ensure safety, and all dippers will be asked to sign a waiver before entering the water, a release said.

Melissa Holland, GRA treasurer, said proceeds are used to help purchase equipment and cover operating costs for the Gloucester High School crew.

Last year’s inaugural Guinea Dip attracted about 35 dippers who raised about $5,000 for the crew.
