GREA names Elaine Norman its Retired Educator of Year

The Gloucester Retired Educators Association named Elaine Norman its 2017 Retired Educator of the Year during its luncheon on Sept. 28 at the DAV building on Short Lane.

During her 30-year career, Norman was a speech/language pathologist for Hampton Public Schools, the Child Development Center in Williamsburg and the Child Development Clinic in Newport News before joining Gloucester Public Schools.

While working in Gloucester, Norman also mentored speech/language pathologists working on competencies and master’s degrees. As a retiree, Norman served as the GREA secretary for the past four years and currently serves as its president.

One of Norman’s main goals has been to work with Gloucester Public Schools Superintendent Walter Clemons to find ways in which the GREA can support the students and teachers of Gloucester.

Norman is also active as chairman of the Christian Education Committee at Bellamy Methodist Church and spends time each month volunteering with groups such as the Holiday Meal Outreach, the Snack Pack Program and the Bellamy food pantry. She is also a board member of the Sons of Norway.

Retired Educator of the Year honorees are chosen annually based on their dedication to the GREA, dedication to helping young people in the community, and participation in community organizations.

Norman is clearly an example of the way in which retired educators and support staff continue to be a valuable resource in our community, said Nina Buzby, the GREA Selection Committee Chair.
