Grand opening Saturday for Mermaids Crossing

Mermaids Crossing, an antique and collectibles shop, will hold its grand opening from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Refreshments and door prizes will be offered.

The store is located at 17704 John Clayton Highway in Mathews in what’s known locally as the “Old Log Cabin.” The building has housed a number of businesses since it was built in the early 1900s, including  craft shops, a pool hall and a dance hall, said Mermaids owner Barbara Bass of Susan.

The “mermaids” are Bass, co-owner Marilyn Jeffers of Richmond, and Bass’s daughter, C. Roman of Gwynn’s Island.

Bass said they will sell antiques, refinished furniture (many pieces refurbished by Roman) and collectibles. Two showrooms contain items as varied as paintings and photographs made by Jeffers and lots of handmade dolls and pillows crafted by Bass.
