Mrs. Grace Foster Shertzer, 97, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Dec. 28, 2012 at her son’s residence.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, at Frank Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel, with Pastor Don Harvey officiating. Interment will take place in Maryland.

Mrs. Shertzer was born in Norfolk, Va., to the late Roland Lewis and Clara Bell Winder Foster. She was one of six children all of whom have preceded her in death.

Mrs. Shertzer was raised in Mathews, Va., and a longtime resident of Baltimore, Md. She was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church since 1985.

She married Harry Reynolds Shertzer Sr. on July 12, 1943 and he preceded her in death in 1975. She said of her marriage to Mr. Shertzer, that those were the happiest years of her life.

She was a woman of great independence and yet was very humble, never wanting to inconvenience others. She always wanted to be up to date on the latest technology and even had a Facebook page. She loved to bake cookies and cakes especially around the holidays. Her friends and family will remember her sense of humor and her thoughtfulness as she always remembered to send a card or letter for a special occasion. She was a competitive card player. Her love of life was her family and she spent her final days surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her son and his wife, Harry (Yvonne) Shertzer of Pfafftown, N.C.; granddaughters and their spouses, Susan (Brent) Griffiths of Waverly, Tenn., Rachel (James) Skinner of Pfafftown, and Sara (Daniel) Lawson of Danbury, N.C.; great-grandchildren, William and Caleb Griffiths and Wyatt Lawson. Also surviving are one niece, several nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 30, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or to Leukemia Lymphoma Society.
