Governor’s order applies to spectators, not participants, VHSL head says

In response to Friday’s announcement from Gov. Ralph Northam of statewide measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, including a reduction in the limit for in-person gatherings from 250 to 25, Virginia High School League Executive Director Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun issued the following statement:
“We want to make it very clear that the Governor’s order for reduction in public and private gatherings to 25 individuals applies to ‘spectators’ and not participants at those events. Nothing in the order prevents VHSL-member schools from holding contests.”

In September, the VHSL Executive Committee adopted its Championships +1 schedule, which created condensed seasons, beginning with winter sports held from Dec. 7 to Feb. 20, and the first interscholastic games to be played on Dec. 21. Sports normally associated with the fall season would play from Feb. 4-May 1, with the first contest date on March 1.
