Governor’s Cup Regatta this weekend

The Virginia Governor’s Cup Regatta will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Ware River Yacht Club in Ware Neck.

This venerable race that fills local waters with sailboats of all sizes is marking its 46th year. All classes are invited to participate and classes with fewer than five boats will race under the Portsmouth handicap system.

Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each class of five or more boats and to the top three finishers in the Portsmouth fleet. The Governor’s Cup goes to the winner of the largest class and there are trophies for sportsmanship and the top junior skipper.

Clayton James is the 2010 regatta chairman and Rick Klein is the race committee chair. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and the races are slated for noon. The fee is $30 for single crew classes and $40 for all two or more crewed boats. For more information call James at 757-941-5200.
