GMHS rescues dozen hurricane dogs

The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society has rescued 12 dogs that were in the path of Hurricane Maria as it approached St. Croix.

A release said GMHS received a call from a partner, Paws from Paradise and St. Croix Animal Welfare Center. The island had already been damaged by Hurricane Irma with worse effects feared from Maria, the release said. Shelter facilities on the island were “filled to the brim.”

Shelter animals were flown to Virginia, and GMHS personnel took 14 to Island Dog Rescue in Virginia Beach. GMHS also brought 12 rescued dogs to its shelter in Gloucester, where they are being treated for medical problems before placement. ...
