Gloucester’s Southside Insurance acquired by Virginia Beach firm

Virginia Beach-based Towne Insurance has acquired Gloucester Southside Insurance Agency, Inc., located on Main Street, Gloucester.

The acquisition also includes Lackey Saunders Co., Inc. of Hampton. Doug Favre of Hampton is president of both Gloucester Southside and Lackey Saunders.

Alvin “Jay” McGlohn and Cordon Davis Jr., both of Ware Neck, are vice presidents of the local office. McGlohn said that he and Davis are supported by three full-time licensed agents.

Gloucester Southside also operates Diggs Agency in Mathews, which McGlohn said has two full-time and one part-time licensed agents.

By acquiring Gloucester Southside, Towne Insurance will expand the company’s footprint to the Middle Peninsula, said F. Dudley Martin, president and chief executive officer of Towne Insurance.

“Clients chose Towne for its broad expertise, and that’s ultimately why we chose them too,” McGlohn said.

“We’re excited about the opportunities that come with being a part of the Towne family,” Davis said.

With this affiliation, Fulton said, Towne Insurance’s team will grow to more than 215 professionals, with 20 offices providing service throughout Virginia and North Carolina. Since 2001, Towne Insurance has completed 17 insurance agency acquisitions.

Fulton said he is pleased to welcome the local principals and their talented teams to Towne Insurance. Local businesses and individuals like to work with these professionals, Fulton said, because they “provide great service and meet a wide variety of needs.”

Towne Insurance agents offer property and casualty insurance, workers’ compensation, bonding and employee benefits. McGlohn said Towne Insurance, like Gloucester Southside, is an independent insurance agency and agents can shop from among many product lines to best meet clients’ needs.

Gloucester Southside was founded in 1927. Lackey Saunders was founded in 1886.

Towne Insurance is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Suffolk-based TowneBank, which operates 36 banking offices on the Peninsula, South Hampton Roads, Richmond, and northeast North Carolina markets.

Towne already had a presence in Gloucester with its subsidiary Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Towne Realty, located on Main Street.
