Gloucester youth places fourth in state geography bee

Cal Hones, 11, of Gloucester took fourth place in the Virginia state finals of the National Geographic Bee in Winchester on Friday. Hones was one of 105 school champions from across the state to compete in the finals.

A home-schooled student, Hones earned his state bid by winning the Tri-Cities Home Educators Geography Bee in January. The geography competition is open to students in grades four through eight, with Hones among its youngest participants. His mother, Sara Hones, said her son is already buried in maps again, hoping for another go at the state finals in 2012.
