Gloucester woman dies in house fire

A Gloucester woman lost her life and her husband was severely injured Tuesday in a fire that occurred just before 2 p.m. in a home at the 2700 block of Hickory Fork Road, just north of Peasley Middle School.

Gloucester Sheriff’s Office dispatchers received a call that there was an active fire in the home with one occupant trapped inside.

According to Capt. John Schick with the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office, Maezine Nixon, 82, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, Frederick Nixon, 83, suffered significant injuries while trying to rescue his wife from the fire.

J.D. Clements, chief of the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, Inc., was in charge of the scene, and said the home was fully involved in heavy fire when medics and firefighters first arrived on scene. “And we were on scene very quickly,” Clements said.
