Gloucester to host Rosenwald school conference

The Charleston Field Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation will hold a Rosenwald school preservation/fundraising conference Friday and Saturday at the First United Baptist Church, Gloucester.

About 50-60 preservationists will attend the full-day workshop on Friday and will tour the Woodville School on Saturday morning, according to Dr. Wesley Wilson of the T.C. Walker and Woodville/Rosenwald School Foundation.

Woodville School, Gloucester County’s only remaining Rosenwald school, is being restored. The historic building is on Route 17 across from the Lighthouse Worship Center at Ordinary.

Some 5,000+ schools were built for African-American children across the South in the early 20th century, with Sears, Roebuck & Company part-owner and president Julius Rosenwald providing matching fundsg for that endeavor. ...
