Gloucester schools open to all hybrid-model students next week

All children in Gloucester County Public Schools who have chosen to attend school on the hybrid model will be back in school by next week. Children who are learning virtually only will not be attending school this semester.

At Gloucester High School, seniors are the only students who have returned prior to today. The first freshmen, sophomores and juniors are expected to return on Nov. 12.

Students assigned to group B will go to GHS on Thursdays and Fridays and students in group A will attend school Mondays and Tuesdays.

All GCPS students will remain home on Wednesdays while each school is disinfected. Instruction will be virtual for all students on Wednesdays as well as on the two days that students are not in school. When not at school, students will continue their work in the Canvas learning management system.

Students who will be going to GHS for the first time this week and next should bring a school-division issued, fully charged Chromebook each day that they attend. Personal devices will not be used at GHS at this time.

The supply list for returning GHS students includes a backpack, mask and hand sanitizer, writing utensils and wired headphones or earbuds. Teachers will provide a list of specific supplies needed for their courses.

Students will be required to adhere to social distancing measures and wear masks while they are in school buildings. They will eat breakfast in their first period classrooms and lunch in their third period classrooms. A bell schedule for hybrid students is on the GHS website.

Breakfast and lunch are free for all GCPS students until Dec. 21 or until federal funds run out.

Sixth graders who have chosen a hybrid model have already returned to their respective middle schools. They will be joined by seventh and eighth graders beginning today and Friday.

Elementary school children in pre-kindergarten through third grade have also been attending school. They will be joined by fourth and fifth graders on hybrid schedules today and tomorrow.

In order for students on the hybrid schedule to be marked present on the three days they are working virtually from home, they must log onto Canvas to complete their online work, or have some other interaction with their classroom teacher as required by the GCPS Learns Anywhere Framework.

Students who have chosen to continue remote learning only will remain virtual until the end of the first semester. They will continue the use of Canvas along with synchronous sessions with their current teachers.
