Gloucester restructuring county’s assessment department

In response to the International Association of Assessing Officers’ (IAAO) evaluation of Gloucester’s first in-house reassessment, the county’s administrator and its board of supervisors have taken several actions, including a restructuring of the Gloucester Real Estate Assessment Department.

County administrator Brenda Garton will be eliminating a senior real estate appraiser position and creating an assistant assessor position.

County spokesperson Christi Lewis said the current assessor, Reese Milligan, is transferring to the newly created assistant assessor position and will continue implementing the reassessment team’s recommendations for the next reassessment until the assessor position is filled.

The assessor will report directly to Garton, and recruitment efforts are underway, Lewis added.

In 2010, supervisors commissioned the IAAO to evaluate the practices and procedures used in the first in-house reassessment completed by Gloucester County.
